The calling of John (the Apostle) is primarily recorded in Matthew 4:18-22 and Mark 1:16-20. Jesus called John and his brother James while they were in a boat mending fishing nets with their father, Zebedee. They immediately left their boat and father to follow Him.

John the Apostle (Son of Zebedee)

  • The Calling: While walking by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus called John and his brother James (the “Sons of Thunder”). They left their livelihood and family behind to become His disciples.
  • Role: He was part of Jesus’s inner circle (along with Peter and James), witnessing key events like the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden.
  • Legacy: John is traditionally recognized as the author of the Gospel of John, the three Epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation. He famously referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved”.
