The Crucifixion and Conversion
- The Spear Wound: In the Gospel of John, an unnamed Roman soldier thrusts a lance into Jesus’ side to ensure he is dead.
- The Miraculous Healing: Apocryphal texts, such as the Gospel of Nicodemus, name this soldier as Longinus. According to legend, he was nearly blind. When blood and water poured from Jesus’ side and touched his eyes, his vision was instantly restored.
- The Proclamation: Witnessing this miracle, along with the supernatural darkness and earthquakes, Longinus proclaimed, “Indeed this was the Son of God!”
Life as a Monk
- Leaving the Military: Refusing to take part in the false narrative that Christ’s disciples stole his body, Longinus abandoned the Roman army.
- Preaching: He sought instruction from the apostles, was baptized, and traveled to his homeland of Cappadocia to preach the Gospel. He lived as a monk for nearly three decades, successfully converting many pagans to the Christian faith.
Martyrdom
- Defying the Governor: News of his missionary work eventually reached the Roman governor, who ordered him to renounce his faith and sacrifice to pagan idols.
- Final Miracles: Refusing to comply, Longinus was severely tortured. According to hagiographies, even after his teeth and tongue were cut out, he miraculously retained the ability to speak clearly. He then smashed the pagan idols in front of the governor, challenging their power.
- Death: He was subsequently beheaded, fully embracing his martyrdom
