This historic event took place around 320 AD in Lesser Armenia (modern-day Sivas, Turkey) under the pagan Eastern Roman Emperor Licinius.
The Mechanics of Their Sacrifice
- The Elite “Thundering Legion”: These 40 men belonged to the prestigious 12th Roman Legion, famous for its Christian soldiers. When ordered to perform a pagan sacrifice under threat of disgrace, they boldly refused, declaring their ultimate allegiance belonged to Jesus.
- The Frozen Lake Ultimatum: To break their resolve through a slow death, the local governor ordered them to be stripped completely naked and forced out onto a frozen lake in the dead of winter.
- The Temptation on the Shore: To test their faith, the Romans set up roaring fires and warm baths right at the edge of the lake. Anyone who wanted to recant their belief could walk off the ice and save their life instantly.
- The 40th Crown: During the freezing night, one soldier’s resolve broke. He ran to the warm baths, but the extreme temperature shift caused his body to go into shock, and he died instantly. A pagan guard watching from the shore, named Aglaius, was so moved by the remaining 39 soldiers’ prayers that he saw radiant crowns descending from heaven. He stripped off his armor, declared himself a Christian, and ran onto the ice—restoring the number of martyrs back to 40.
